Magic Mania UPDATE!

Weather Advisory! New Logistics!

The weather situation for this weekend’s race at Magic Mountain Resort (MMR) sees the rainy weather hanging around an extra twelve hours into our Saturday morning. We remain excited for this race in spite of the current cold (possible snow), rain and high winds, but need to advise with new logistics.

  • Team Dinner has been CANCELLED due to winds and split in Friday night sleeping arrangements.
  • Friday Pre-Ride: Coach Andrew will be available at 5:00 PM to ride (weather/course permitting).
  • Camping is now optional at Magic Mania due to deteriorating weather conditions. Focus for team gathering will be Lower & Upper Penstemon.
    • Be prepared for rain, possible sleet, high winds and low temperatures.
    • Be overly prepared! Bring your winter rain gear, winter boots, wool socks and extra warm clothes.
  • Breakfast Burritos will be hot and ready in the Pit Zone at 7:30AM (location change from past races) along with hot drinks.
  • Hot Soup and sandwiches for lunch will be made available with hot drinks throughout the day

Friday Night Options:

  1. Camp/Tents/Vehicle camping
  • Make sure your tent can handle the possible high wind/rain conditions
  • First look for a spot at Lower Penstemon with other teammates or Upper Penstemon which is on a “first come” basis
  1. Campers/RVs
  • There are campsites in the Lower Penstemon campground that can be made available.
  1. Hotel/Motels in the Twin Falls area
  • 45 minute drive from Twin Falls to MMR venue
  1. Driving early Saturday morning from Boise
  • Arrive at venue by 7:30 and ready to pre-ride at 8:00 AM
  • Allow time to be shuttled from parking lot

Athletes are strongly encouraged to pre-ride this course! This racecourse is rated “7 out of 10” by the League Director. Everyone has the skills to ride this course, but we want you to see it and get comfortable with the new riding conditions. Pre-riding will also help you make clothing choices for your race.

Athletes should arrive by 7:30AM to be geared-up and be ready to ride by 8AM.

Parents: As in the past, we will have a Q&A 6:00-6:15 PM tonight at practice to discuss the race this weekend.  Please attend as able.

Thank you for your time and understanding as we strive to meet the changing conditions for this race.

Coach Renee and Andrew

Grand Charge Results

The Boise Braves Mountain Bike Team was totally PUMPED going into The Grand Charge (Race #3) at Grand Targhee on Saturday!

Ian Mullens (BBMTB), Alec Miller (C4) and Grant Gardener (Pocatello Pioneers) had an epic battle in the Varsity Boys wave. They were riding at “pro” speeds and the lead was alternating between Alec and Ian each lap with Grant hot on their heels. After averaging 24.75 minute splits for four laps, Ian came home with the win after putting it all out there on the race course.

James Roloff broke his chain 10 feet of the start line, ran ½ mile up a steep hill, replaced the chain just under five minutes, passed over 100 riders, and even with a 5-minute penalty for “outside assistance”, placed 15th in a field of 61 riders!

We had student-athletes get on the podium for the first time this season.  Congratulations Bodie and Tysen Brownlee and Cooper Wiley! With many injuries and mechanical failures this past weekend, the Braves still came in 4th overall among 22 teams, and is ranked 2nd in the League going into the Championship races!

As you know, BBMTB also supports the Idaho League with volunteers. We are required to provide four (4) volunteers. Please keep up your support by remembering to volunteer. No special skills are required and you get the best seat in the house for spectating.  Please start the Idaho League volunteer via our team system so we know who is signed up.

Look forward to a fantastic race at an incredible venue.

This is the longest travel distance to a race venue.  Where possible, car pool. Take time to hydrant, fuel and stretch during this drive.

All team school’s will be sent a roster of athletes racing who can expect an excused absence from school on Friday. Please expect a full day out of school.  The six (6) hours in the car is a great time to get ahead on your studies.  If you have any homework questions, we have a plethora of highly skilled and educated parents, coaches and teachers who can help keep you get up to speed this weekend. Please use these resources!

Clothing

Cold, Cold, Cold!  It’s going to be cold! Plan for a cold evening and a cold morning.  It will be perfectly comfortable by mid-day Saturday.  High school girl’s start at 9:30 Saturday and we expect it will be around 35-40 degrees.  Cycling jackets with layers, down jackets and covered legs will be required while warming up.

Camping and Weather

Camping at GTR will be in a parking lot overlooking the Race Pit Zone (400 ft away) and race course.  Turn left into parking lot, prior to GTR Lodge and look for BBMTB signage. Our camp will be the first space on the right next to a water source. No need to travel with water to this venue.targhee2016-camp

We will have more room for our camp, but will place tents close together with planned walkways.  Bring extra Thermarests or mats to lay on. There is room for RV’s if desired.  Please let us know if you plan to bring  a trailer, so we can organize a parking spot with the team.

GTR will have similar cold temperatures to Galena and expect mid-sixties during the day.

Let us know if you need any assistance with gear. Don’t be shy. We have lots of tents, thermarests, sleeping bags, cots and blankets. Really! Let us know what you need!
